Everything you need to know about staying in a government-owned bungalow deep inside Wilpattu National Park.
What you are actually staying in
Government-Owned
The bungalows are owned and managed by the Department of Wildlife Conservation (DWC), Sri Lanka's government body responsible for protected areas. They are not private lodges — they sit inside the national park itself.
Inside the Park
Unlike hotels outside the gates, these bungalows are deep in Wilpattu's interior. You are surrounded by wilderness — no fences, no walls between you and the animals. This is what makes them unique.
8 Locations
Eight bungalows spread across the park, each positioned near a permanent water source (villu). Every location has different wildlife patterns, so your choice of bungalow shapes your experience.
Not Luxury — By Design
Facilities are intentionally basic. No AC, no fixed Wi-Fi, no room service. This is a wilderness experience, not a resort. The value is in the access — being inside the park when the gates open, before the day-trip crowds arrive.
How to book
DWC bungalows are booked through licensed operators rather than direct public reservations. We handle the permit request and logistics for you.
We act solely as a booking facilitator. The bungalows are government-owned eco-accommodation, and the DWC prohibits the commercial resale of these subsidised assets. We do not resell the DWC bungalow or any single component of the trip — we build one complete guided tour around it.

Confirm With 30% Deposit
A 30% deposit secures your booking — payable online. We request availability from DWC and reserve the best bungalow we can for your group. The balance is due on the day of your tour.

Early Booking = Your Choice
Book at least 8 weeks in advance and we will secure your preferred bungalow based on your wildlife priorities. Late bookings get the best available.

Arrive & Explore
Meet your naturalist at the gate. We drive you into the park to your bungalow. Everything — meals, drives, park fees — is handled. You just show up.
What you get
Solar Power
Electricity runs on solar panels — available roughly 6PM to 10PM. Charge devices during this window. Bring a power bank for daytime use.
Basic Beds
Simple beds with mosquito nets. Not luxury, but comfortable enough. The sounds of the jungle are your bedtime soundtrack.
Attached Bathroom
Each bungalow has an attached bathroom. Basic fixtures — running water, a shower, and a toilet. Don't expect hotel standards.
No AC, No Fixed Wi-Fi
No air conditioning — ceiling fans only. There is no reliable Wi-Fi in the bush, so plan to be offline. This is a basic, state-owned bungalow, not a lodge.
Meals Prepared On-Site
Simple Sri Lankan meals are prepared for you at the bungalow — breakfast, lunch, and dinner — and we can accommodate dietary requirements with advance notice. This is home-style cooking, not restaurant dining.
Nighttime
Leopards, elephants, and other nocturnal animals frequently pass through the bungalow grounds after dark. Sleep under mosquito nets to the sounds of the jungle.

Each sits near a permanent water source. Each draws different wildlife. Your choice of bungalow shapes what you see — and when you see it.
Manikwila Bungalow
Best for: Leopard sightings
Wildlife: Leopards, elephants, crocodiles, painted storks

Prime leopard territory. Positioned near a permanent water source that draws leopards year-round. One of the best spots in Wilpattu for big cat encounters.
After dark: The permanent water source draws nocturnal visitors nightly — fishing cats, civets, and mouse deer are regularly spotted around the bungalow after dark. Leopard calls echo through the forest.
Lunuwewa Bungalow
Best for: Central location
Wildlife: Birds, elephants, deer, crocodiles

Right in the middle of the park — getting around is easy from here. On the edge of one of Wilpattu's largest lakes with excellent birding and regular elephant sightings.
Thalawila Bungalow
Best for: Quiet escape
Wildlife: Elephants, leopards, sloth bears

The safest and quietest option, a bit away from everything. Closer to the elephant corridors. Perfect for those who want peace and a slower pace.
Panikkawila Bungalow
Best for: Birdwatching

Similar central positioning to Lunuwewa — good for getting around the park. Known for excellent birding with a mix of forest and open-country species.
Manawila Bungalow
Best for: Leopard sightings

Leopard territory. Dense forest surroundings with frequent big cat activity. One of Wilpattu's most reliable leopard zones.
Mahaweva Bungalow
Best for: More animal activity

Overlooking a big lake where large groups of animals gather. Open plains with constant wildlife movement — elephants, deer herds, and peacocks in abundance.
Maradammaduwa Dormitory
Best for: Sloth bears & large groups

The best spot for sloth bear sightings in Wilpattu. Dormitory-style accommodation that handles large groups up to 20 people. Deep in bear territory.
After dark: Deep in the interior, the dormitory compound sees regular night visitors — slender loris in the trees, civets foraging along the perimeter, and occasional leopard calls in the distance.
Kokmote Bungalow
Best for: Multi-day stays & leisure
Wildlife: Elephants, crocodiles, birdlife
Up to 4 guests · Kokmote
Beside a river where you can take a dip between safaris. The best choice for stays longer than one night — combining wildlife with a touch of relaxation.
What to pack
Essentials
Towels, bug spray, sunscreen, a hat, and comfortable clothing in neutral colors. Muted greens and browns work best for wildlife viewing.
Power
A portable power bank is highly recommended. Solar power is limited to evening hours. Camera batteries should be fully charged before arriving.
Photography
Bring extra memory cards and lens cleaning supplies. Dust is constant on park tracks. A bean bag or support for your camera helps on bumpy drives.
Comfort
A light jacket for early mornings, comfortable closed shoes for walking, and binoculars if you have them. We provide drinking water.
Why basic is the point
You are not staying in a resort. You are sleeping inside a national park, in a building that sits in the middle of leopard and elephant territory. The "basic facilities" are not a compromise — they are what makes the experience real.
No fixed Wi-Fi means no distractions. No AC means the jungle sounds fill your evening. Solar power means your day ends when the animals settle. The simplicity is intentional — it puts you in the wilderness, not behind a screen.
The value is not in thread count or minibars. It is in being the first people on the tracks when the park opens, hearing elephants at night, and waking up inside the park while day visitors are still at the gate.
