Wilpattu is best from February to October, when the dry season concentrates wildlife around the villu lakes. The park is closed during the heaviest monsoon months (November-January). Leopard sightings are possible year-round, but visibility improves significantly in the dry months.
Outside the park, you stay in comfortable partner bungalows with modern amenities and drive to the gates each morning. Inside, you camp within the park boundaries, gaining early-morning and after-dark access that day visitors miss. Inside tours are more immersive but more rustic.
Wilpattu has one of the highest leopard densities in Asia. While no sighting can be guaranteed, our 20+ years of tracking experience means we consistently achieve high sighting rates on multi-day tours. The longer your expedition, the higher the probability.
A telephoto lens (200-600mm) is essential for leopard photography. A mid-range zoom (70-200mm) covers most scenarios. We recommend bringing a bean bag or support for vehicle-based shooting. Our field guide has a detailed photography gear article.
