A telephoto lens is non-negotiable for wildlife photography. The 200-600mm range covers most safari scenarios, from distant leopards to nearby birdlife. A mid-range zoom (70-200mm) is useful for environmental shots and landscapes. Bring a bean bag or flexible tripod for vehicle-based shooting: stability is critical at long focal lengths.

Sun and Heat Protection

Wilpattu's dry season temperatures regularly exceed 30°C. A wide-brimmed hat, quality sunglasses, and SPF 50+ sunscreen are essential. Bring a reusable water bottle and drink consistently throughout the day: dehydration is a real risk on full-day drives.

Insect Protection

Mosquitoes are present, especially around water and during evening drives. Use DEET-based repellent on exposed skin. A light scarf or buff can protect your neck. Some lodges provide mosquito nets for sleeping areas, but it's worth confirming in advance.

Other Essentials

Binoculars for scanning ahead of the vehicle. A small daypack for drives. Motion sickness tablets if you're prone (park roads are rough). A headlamp for early morning starts. Power bank for charging devices. Cash for tips and small purchases. ATMs are limited near the parks.
