1. Wilpattu National Park
Sri Lanka's largest park at 1,317 km². Highest leopard density in the country. Features unique villu (natural lake) landscapes. Uncrowded, with a wild, undeveloped feel. Best for multi-day photography expeditions. Open February to October.
2. Yala National Park
The most popular park, with the highest visitor numbers. Good leopard and elephant sightings. Easy access from Colombo and the south coast. Multiple blocks with varied habitats. Can feel crowded at peak times. Open year-round.
3. Minneriya National Park
Home to The Gathering: up to 300 elephants assembling around the reservoir from August to October. Smaller park (88 km²) ideal for day trips from Sigiriya. Best visited during the dry season for elephant spectacle.
4. Udawalawe National Park
Sri Lanka's best park for reliable elephant sightings. Herds of 50+ elephants are common. Less tourist-heavy than Yala. Also home to leopards, sloth bears, and crocodiles. Good for family safaris.
5. Bundala National Park
Sri Lanka's first Ramsar wetland. Exceptional birding with over 200 species, including flamingos during winter months. Also has elephants, crocodiles, and leopards. Less visited than the big parks, offering a quieter experience.
6. Horton Plains National Park
A highland park with a completely different landscape: cloud forest, grassland, and the dramatic World's End cliff. Not a traditional safari park, but excellent for hiking, endemic birds, and sambur deer. Best combined with a lowland safari.
