Best Time to Visit Wilpattu National Park

Dry Season (February – October)

This is Wilpattu's prime window. As rainfall decreases, water levels in the villu lakes drop, concentrating wildlife around remaining water sources. Leopard sightings peak during these months because animals are more visible in the thinner vegetation. The months of June through September offer the best combination of dry weather, active wildlife, and good visibility.

Wet Season (November – January)

The northeast monsoon brings heavy rainfall to Wilpattu. The park typically closes its interior sections during the worst months, though boundary areas may remain accessible. Vegetation thickens, making wildlife harder to spot. However, the park is greener and more photogenic, and if you do find a leopard, the lush backdrop makes for stunning images.

Month-by-Month Breakdown

February and March are excellent: the dry season is establishing, vegetation is still relatively green, and leopard sightings pick up. April and May see increasing dryness, with wildlife concentrating further. June through September is peak: driest conditions, highest sighting rates, but also warmest temperatures. October is transitional: still good but the first rains may arrive late in the month.

Temperature and Weather

Wilpattu sits in Sri Lanka's north-western lowlands, with temperatures ranging from 27°C to 35°C year-round. The dry season months are the hottest, with June through August regularly exceeding 32°C. Bring sun protection, plenty of water, and lightweight breathable clothing. Morning and evening drives are the most comfortable and offer the best light for photography.

Booking Tips

For peak season (June-September), book at least 2-3 months in advance. Wilpattu's accommodation options are limited compared to Yala, and the best lodges fill quickly. February-May offers a good balance of availability and conditions. Last-minute bookings are possible outside peak season but limit your choices.
