The Main Draw
Wilpattu's main draw is its leopard population, the densest per square kilometre in Sri Lanka. It also offers sloth bears, elephants, and over 200 bird species. Minneriya's headline attraction is The Gathering, where up to 300 elephants congregate around the receding Minneriya Tank during the dry season (August-October). Outside of The Gathering, Minneriya has a smaller resident elephant population and fewer predator species.
Park Size and Terrain
Wilpattu is significantly larger at 1,317 km² compared to Minneriya's 88 km². Wilpattu's terrain includes dense scrub, grassland, and the signature villu lakes. Minneriya is dominated by the reservoir and surrounding forest. The smaller size of Minneriya means wildlife is more concentrated, which helps during The Gathering but limits variety outside that event.
The Gathering: Minneriya's Unique spectacle
From August to October, as water levels drop in Minneriya Tank, elephants from surrounding areas converge on the remaining water sources. This creates one of the world's great wildlife spectacles: herds of 50-300 elephants feeding, bathing, and socialising against the backdrop of the ancient reservoir. Wilpattu has elephants, but nothing matches this scale of assembly.
Safari Duration and Style
Wilpattu rewards multi-day trips. The park is large enough that a single day barely scratches the surface, and leopards require patience and tracking skill. Most visitors spend 2-4 days. Minneriya works well as a half-day or full-day trip, especially if you're based in Sigiriya or Habarana. It's compact enough to cover in one visit.
Crowds and Atmosphere
Wilpattu is consistently uncrowded. You might see fewer than a dozen vehicles on a full-day drive. Minneriya during The Gathering can be busy, with dozens of vehicles lining up at elephant sighting locations. Outside peak season, Minneriya is quiet. For photographers who want clean compositions without other vehicles in frame, Wilpattu is the better bet year-round.
