Leopard vs Elephant Focus
Wilpattu is Sri Lanka's top leopard destination. The park's dense scrub and villu landscape provide ideal leopard habitat, and our tracking experience consistently delivers sightings on multi-day tours. Udawalawe's open grassland and water sources make elephants easy to find. Herds of 30-50 are common. Udawalawe has leopards too, but they're harder to spot in the terrain.

Wilpattu's landscape is defined by villu lakes surrounded by dense scrub forest. It feels wild and untouched. Udawalawe is more open, with grasslands, reservoir areas, and scattered forest. The open terrain makes wildlife easier to spot but offers less dramatic photographic backdrops than Wilpattu's jungle settings.
Visitor Numbers
Wilpattu consistently has the lowest visitor density of any major Sri Lankan park. Udawalawe sees moderate traffic, less than Yala but more than Wilpattu. During peak season, Udawalawe can have 20-30 vehicles at popular elephant spots. Wilpattu rarely exceeds a dozen across the entire park.
