Best Lenses for Safari Photography

The right lens makes or breaks your safari images. A telephoto is essential for distant wildlife, but bringing only a telephoto limits your storytelling. Here's the lens kit that works best for a Sri Lanka safari, based on years of field experience.
The Essential Lens: 200-600mm
If you bring one lens, make it this. The 200-600mm range covers 90% of safari scenarios: distant elephants, leopards in trees, birds on branches, and everything in between. Modern 200-600mm zooms are sharp, relatively lightweight, and handle well from a vehicle. Sigma and Tamron offer excellent third-party options if you don't want to pay for first-party glass.
The Versatile Companion: 70-200mm
The 70-200mm f/2.8 is the most versatile lens you can own. For safari, it covers environmental portraits (animal in landscape), group shots of herds, camp scenes, and landscapes. It's also faster than most telephoto zooms, making it better for low-light golden hour shooting. If you're bringing two lenses, pair a 200-600mm with a 70-200mm and you're covered for almost everything.
Wide Angle: 16-35mm
Not essential for wildlife, but useful for landscapes, camp life, and context shots. A wide-angle lens captures the scale of the park, the drama of a sunset over the villu, or the atmosphere of a night drive. If you have room in your bag, bring one. If you're travelling light, your phone handles wide-angle duties well enough.
What About Prime Lenses?
Prime lenses (fixed focal length) are sharper and faster than zooms, but less practical for safari. You can't zoom, so you rely on the animal moving into your frame, which often doesn't happen. A 400mm f/2.8 or 600mm f/4 is spectacular but heavy, expensive, and limits your flexibility. Zooms are the pragmatic choice for most safari photographers.
Mounting and Stability
Telephoto lenses are heavy and need support. A bean bag draped over the vehicle door or window is the simplest and most effective solution. Some photographers use window mounts or clamp systems. Whatever you choose, practice before the trip. Fumbling with your support system when a leopard appears is the worst feeling in safari photography.
