How to Get to Wilpattu National Park

From Colombo

The most common route is via the Puttalam highway (A3), heading north along the coast. From Colombo, drive through Negombo, Chilaw, and Puttalam before turning inland toward the park entrance. The total distance is approximately 260km, with a driving time of 5-6 hours depending on traffic. The roads are well-maintained up to Puttalam, with the final stretch to the park on a smaller road.

From Negombo

Negombo is closer than Colombo and a convenient starting point if you're arriving by air (Bandaranaike International Airport is nearby). The drive takes 4-5 hours via the A3 highway through Chilaw and Puttalam. Many safari operators offer transfers from Negombo hotels.

From Anuradhapura

If you're visiting the Cultural Triangle, Anuradhapura is the nearest major city: just 1.5 hours south-east of Wilpattu. This makes it easy to combine a cultural tour with a wildlife expedition. The road from Anuradhapura runs through rural areas with less traffic than the coastal route.

Public Transport

Public buses run from Colombo to Puttalam regularly. From Puttalam, you'll need a private vehicle or arranged transfer to reach the park entrance. Public transport to the park itself is very limited. Most visitors either self-drive or book transfers through their accommodation.

• No direct public transport to the park gates

Self-Drive Tips

A car is fine for the highway portion, but a 4x4 is recommended for park access roads, especially during or after rain. The roads inside the park are unpaved and can be rough. If you're not comfortable driving on unpaved roads, arrange transfers through your accommodation: most Wilpattu lodges offer this service.
